I thought it would be fun to share some brief opinions on who the big winner was at this year’s E3. So, if you’ve been following the coverage, join in and post your thoughts about the conferences.
For me, Nintendo swept the show. As the only company showing something other than prettier versions of existing franchises, Nintendo’s “Wii Fit” probably made the biggest splash. Plus, this single title is hands-down guaranteed to sell a gob-zillion systems.
Attention Sony and Microsoft: We all get it. Your consoles can render gorgeous graphics. Mission accomplished. Now, beyond that, do you have anything else to add?
Anyways, looks like the mainstream press is taking note of Nintendo’s conference too…
“Nintendo is the Star of E3 as Rivals Scramble to Catch Up.” - Washington Post
“Sony Draws Yawns”; “Nintendo Capitalizes on Wii” - Forbes
“Nintendo and its Wii are riding the biggest wave of success at the E3 game summit, overshadowing tech giants Microsoft and Sony and their more powerful entries.” - USA Today
I’ll admit, Nintendo did sell me on Wii Fit. It is definitely a great marketing decision to move forward with that title which is sure to increase sales. The one thing Microsoft and Sony had over Nintendo, though, were games. Yes, Nintendo showed some great ones like Mario Kart, Metroid, Wii Fit, and Super Mario Galaxy, but as with their past history, those are all first party. Sony and Microsoft had an abundance of great their party games showcased. When I really thought about which press conference showed the most games I was interested in, I would have to say 360 and PS3 led the pack. They have a ton of third party support and an arsenal of great hardcore games coming out. As far as total excitement and innovation, Nintendo no doubt stole the show, but honestly, I was a little disappointed overall. There was nothing that really had me floored or took my breath away. Cool, exciting stuff? Yes. Incredibly spectacular. No.
Some great points Hans… Sony and M$ definitely delivered to the hardcore crowd!
From what I saw, Nintendo wowed the crowd with their home grown games. It seems like the crowd was interested in a change of scenery. I kinda find myself enthralled with new functionality as opposed to superior graphics. People are definitely on to Sony’s imperialistic approach too. How the mighty are falling.
As far as games go, I was really looking for Halo 3 to do some damage at E3, but I think that the previous overhyping took away some of it’s lustre. I literally played Halo 2 for 2 straight years with barely any other game being played on the XBox. I don’t see the same excitement with H3. At any rate, does anyone play games for PC anymore? Didn’t think so.
